News-Examiner: How did you get started in construction?
The News-Examiner recently sat down with Soda Springs High School head golf coach Bob Jorgensen who also runs a local construction company. Here are his answers to our questions.
News-Examiner: How did you get started in construction?
Jorgensen: My dad did construction when we were very young and we would go help him and clean up the job site. He would throw a handful of change amongst the debris and we would pick it all up while hauling the garbage to his trailer.
NE: Are there similarities between coaching high school golf and running a construction company?
Jorgensen: They both involve training and influencing people to make good choices both on the job/golf course and in life.
NE: What led you to take the golf coach position at Soda Springs High School?
Jorgensen: I have been involved with the older students for a few years on the (golf) simulator and the position opened up last fall and I was asked to consider applying for the position. I was interviewed and selected to be the head coach and was joined by (assistant coaches) Connie Parker, April Nelson and Chris Capell.
NE: How do you think high school kids today differ from when you were in high school?
Jorgensen: The amount of technology available to the kids today presents them with a tremendous amount of opportunity and education in every aspect of life. Even golf with the tutorials available on the web opens up so many learning venues.
NE: What have you learned most from the kids on your golf team so far?
Jorgensen: It has amazed me the resilience the kids have shown and unwavering commitment to improve their game of golf. Golf is hard! Golf is frustrating! I’ll say it again, golf is hard! They have never quit but only strive to be better which is life.
NE: What do you hope to teach most to the kids you coach?
Jorgensen: As I am not a professional golfer, nor do I have any prior coaching experience, I can only hope to teach them that you get out of life/golf what you are willing to put into it and that effort is rewarded with success.
NE: What are some goals you have for your team?
Jorgensen: The obvious goal for me and what I ask of them is to improve daily and work on aspects of their game that are diminishing their scores. We also hope to place well at districts and qualify for state. I believe that is very attainable.
NE: What does the future look like for the Soda Springs High School golf team?
Jorgensen: The future is very bright indeed for the golf team. We only lose 3 seniors (2 girls and 1 boy) with only a few juniors on the team as well. We are very young and the talent runs deep with this group of kids. I’m also aware of several upcoming eighth grade boys and girls who are going to continue to contribute to our team. This team’s potential is great and will only continue to grow which is exciting to see in the golf program again.
